April A- Z Challenge

Sheffield

Location:        Sheffield Tasmania

Price:              FREE

Why Go:         Murals – 110 and counting

Website:         https://www.discovertasmania.com.au/places/north-west/sheffield?gclid=Cj0KCQjw2v-gBhC1ARIsAOQdKY3yhIafI2WtnVv6HD0bzxbRZhEqoS-9p-2OSYHOtHFs1pwxHPz7vFEaAgqXEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

A former hub of the hydroelectric scheme, Sheffield has reinvented itself as an arts community. Admire more than 140 murals on its streets that depict local stories and characters, and learn more about the art on a self-guided audio tour. Visit the town’s galleries and studios. And time your visit with the annual week-long International Mural Fest painting competition.

Speaking of festivals, check out the annual three-day SteamFest, one of the biggest displays of working steam machinery in Australia. And there’s Taste of the North West, where local produce from the region’s rich soil is celebrated over a long weekend.

Tour the kookily named hamlets of Nowhere Else, Paradise and Promised Land, and get lost in the large hedge maze at Tasmazia and the Village of Lower Crackpot at Promised Land. Relax at beautiful Lake Barrington, a great spot to picnic and fish. It’s the site of an international rowing course, where the 1990 world championships were held.

Why Visit:

Ok, I’ll be a 100% honest here, I had to lie to my hubby to get his to agree to go to Sheffield.

I told him there was a bit of street art, that we could have a bit of a stroll, and it was the closest point of our next destination.  He was unimpressed when we got the map of the 140 murals currently on view.

I absolutely loved Sheffield and I would move there in an instant if I could find work, but it is a tourist town.  The views are spectacular of black bluff, the artwork is amazing, and the food is divine.  The township is full of things to see, friendly locals, and places to visit.

Go, go, go.

That’s all I’m going to say.

  1. That’s a great name – Nowhere Else!
Here in The States we have a Whynot, Okay, Threeway, Climax, and my personal favorite, Mianus. I see the exit signs for Mianus whenever I’m on the New England Thruway in Connecticut. I’ve always been tempted to snap a pic and post it on FB with the caption “Traffic is a bit heavy in Mianus today”. That oughta raise a few eyebrows! 🥸
