Located in Fremantle, Western Australia, the Fremantle Gaol acts as both a heritage experience and a gallery, hosting exhibitions related to the history of the gaol.
Fremantle Prison was built as a convict barracks in the 19th century and remained in continual use until 1991. The Prison was a place of hangings, floggings, dramatic convict escapes and prisoner riots. Inmates included imperial convicts, colonial prisoners, enemy aliens, prisoners of war and maximum-security detainees.
Why Visit:
I’ve visited many gaols, and this is one of the creepiest. It offers a variety of tours and I would highly recommend the Tunnels tour, which you take by boat. Delving into the underground tunnels where the prisons worked in complete darkness is a mind-blowing experience and will give you an insight into just how bad the convicts had it.

Great! Coming from the continent that was meant to be a penal colony, this is perfect. I’d go in a heartbeat!
