Hooves clatter across wooden bridge
Children with muddied knees
Scurry for safety
Marbles clutched tightly in dirtied hands
Debutantes survey street
From beneath parasol held aloft
Lips pout, no one to please
Spin of heels and they enter dressmakers’ shop
Young bucks laugh too loud entering
Gentleman’s Club brashly unconcerned
Time to douse one’s trouble in the cups
Perhaps play a couple of hands
Elderly matrons complete their visits
Sipping bitter tea with sweet smiles
Eyes assessing young women’s charms
Searching for that perfect bride
Gentleman toast each other
Eyeing young bucks with indulgent smiles
As they discuss politics in lowered voices
Parliament recess, they’ll be heading to their country estates
