… mortality was such a handicap.

The stray thought taunted me as I trod the dampened sand beside the liquid blue sea, and annoyed I scowled. 

I’d left them at the diner, aware of their disgust as they pretended absorption in their electronic gadgets, uncomfortably aware that they’d seen through me effortlessly.  They’d seen the fragments of my shattered dreams, the pieces of the mirror I kept to remind me of my seven years bad luck, they’d felt the weight of the sunken sky which hung above me laden with gloom.  They’d tasted the sawdust of my hope as it burnt in the flames of my regret.

No, they hadn’t even glanced up as I flung my body through the open door and out into the wilderness of the streets, to tread on this dampened sand beside the electric blue sea, but then I hadn’t expected them to.

For I was having dinner with a few of my closest friends when I suddenly realised,

… mortality was such a handicap.
