Reality Bites

Fandango’s Story Starter #42

I would have happily married Darlene if it weren’t for them.  Them you ask?  Yep them, the little people who appeared in my veggie patch the day after Darlene took up residence with high expectations.

At first, I wasn’t too bothered, I mean they didn’t venture any further, and if I went down to harvest something for dinner I was only met with some loud grumbles.  A woman like me, I could ignore the likes of them, I was a truck driver after all, but then things began to change.

It started when I was shelling the peas, a note inside one of the pods stated quite impolitely, we don’t like you, we don’t like your job, we don’t like your lack of fashion sense.  You ain’t good enough for Darlene.

Baffled I threw that incriminating note away, dismissing their threats, but in hindsight I should have headed back down there with the insecticide and sorted them out.

You see about a week later I went out into the garden for a fresh chilli, quite innocently I plucked it, surprised at the untoward silence, but absently I dismissing my unease and went back inside, and that was when they struck.

The chilli damn well exploded, I nearly lost my whole hand, so I won’t be marrying Darlene at all now, I’m immigrating.  I heard Mars is nice this time of year.
